Presbyopia usually occur’s beginning at around the age of 40. People in this age group begin to experience blurred near vision, for example when reading, sewing or working at the computer. You cannot escape presbyopia even if you've never had a vision problem before. People who are short sighted will notice that their near vision blurs when they wear their usual eyeglasses or contact lenses, it may actually help if they take their glasses off to read.
When people develop presbyopia, they find they need to hold books, magazines, newspapers, menus and other reading materials at arm’s length in order to focus properly. When performing near work, such as embroidery or handwriting, they may develop headaches, eye strain or feel fatigued.
Presbyopia can be corrected by wearing reading glasses. If you already wear glasses, you may be prescribed bifocal or varifocal lenses to correct distance and near vision.
If you already wear contact lenses, you may be prescribed bifocal contact lenses or reading glasses (as well as your contact lenses). Another option is a monovision system, where one contact lens corrects for near vision and the other for distance vision. It’s important to have regular check-ups at MM Eyecare to ensure that your glasses or contact lenses provide the optimum correction for your eyes.
